Apical pneumothorax

Case contributed by Dr Ian Bickle

Left sided chest pain of short duration. No trauma.

Patient Data

Age: 40 years
Gender: Female

The lung edge is evident at the left lung apex with lucency peripheral to this due to absent lung markings.

Right lung clear.   Heart size normal.

Case Discussion

A small pneumothorax of this size one would hope not to miss.

Always check the apices as part of the structured approach to chest x-ray reporting to make missing smaller apical abnormalities less likely.
